Auburn Hills, MI—April 20, 2021-- Auburn Hills City Councilmember Ron Moniz announced today that he will be resigning from his role as City Councilmember effective May 18, 2021.  In a letter dated April 19, 2021 to City Clerk Laura Pierce, Moniz indicates that his desire to focus more time on family and his own personal health led him to his decision.  He has served as a City Councilmember since November 2017.

“I want to thank the residents of Auburn Hills for electing me to the City Council not once, but twice.  It has been a pleasure to serve in this capacity and I leave my role knowing that we continue to provide quality services, regular investment in our infrastructure, and that our finances are in good order,” said Moniz.  Moniz is expected to continue as a member of the Public Safety Advisory Committee.

Moniz has served the city in both appointed and elected positions.  He is a retired member of the Department of Public works and served as a District Chief in the then paid-on-call fire department.

“Ron has been a solid contributor to the Team we have built here in Auburn Hills, said Mayor Kevin McDaniel.  He brought a perspective as an employee as well as a taxpayer and always balanced that by doing the right thing in the interests of both. We will miss Ron’s independent opinions, his great sense of humor, and his dedication to our community in his role as City Councilmember.”

According to the Auburn Hills City Charter, a vacancy created by a resignation shall be filled by the person who received the next highest number of votes from the November 2019 City Council election.  That individual, Eugene Hawkins III, will assume the seat vacated by Ron Moniz.  “We are very fortunate to be able to add Eugene Hawkins to the City Council, said Mayor McDaniel.  Like Ron Moniz, Eugene Hawkins is a longtime resident and has been actively involved in our local government; currently serving as Chairperson of the Public Safety Advisory Committee and as a member of the board of directors of the Tax Increment Finance Authority.  I know that I speak on behalf of all of City Council when I say that Mr. Hawkins will be a welcome addition as our newest City Council colleague.”  Hawkins is expected to be sworn-in at a regular meeting of the Auburn Hills City Council on Monday, June 7, 2021.
